About Ben Nevis
Ben Nevis is the highest summit in the United Kingdom and the remains of a Devonian volcano, with a broad lower mountain and rugged upper cliffs.
The Mountain Track from Glen Nevis is the usual walking route. The north face has more demanding ridges and climbing lines, and weather on the summit plateau can differ sharply from conditions below.
Notable history
- 1771 — First recorded ascent: James Robertson made the first recorded ascent while collecting botanical specimens.
- 1883 — Observatory: A summit observatory operated on Ben Nevis from 1883 until 1904.
Routes and approaches
The Mountain Track is a demanding hill day with steep, changeable terrain. The summit plateau can be misty even when Glen Nevis is clear.
