About Aiguille du Midi

Aiguille du Midi is a rocky summit on the southern side of the Chamonix valley, rising above the town and the upper Mont Blanc glacier basins.

The summit is reached by the Aiguille du Midi cable car, while mountaineering routes continue from the high station towards the Vallée Blanche, Mont Blanc du Tacul and the Midi–Plan ridge.

Notable ascents

  • 1818 — South-east ridge: The first ascent was made by Antoni Malczewski and mountain guides François Balmat and Alexandre Tournier.
  • 1956 — South face: René Desmaison and Pierre Mazeaud completed the first ascent of the south face.
