About Jbel Toubkal

Jbel Toubkal rises from the High Atlas south of Marrakesh, where dry valleys, high passes and broad scree slopes meet the mountain's twin summit ridges.

The normal trek is non-technical in summer but still a high mountain outing. Heat in the lower valleys, cold and wind above the refuge, loose ground and rapid weather changes can all appear within a short itinerary.

Imlil is the usual gateway, followed by the valley approach to the Toubkal Refuge and a summit day on the south cwm. Side valleys and longer Atlas traverses offer a richer trip when the goal is more than a single summit.

Toubkal's visibility from the Marrakesh region can make it seem close and simple. Keep the map, transport, water and refuge plan explicit, and confirm local access and conditions before departure.

Documented mountaineering milestones

  • 1923 — First recorded ascent of Toubkal: The Marquis de Segonzac, V. Berger and H. Dolbeau
  • Summer season — South-cwm trekking route established as the standard approach: A non-technical route in settled conditions, subject to snow and weather

Routes and approaches

The standard approach starts in Imlil and uses the Toubkal Refuge before climbing the south cwm. Longer High Atlas routes add passes, villages and acclimatization days around the summit.
