About Mera Peak

Mera Peak is a summit in Nepal’s Malahangur Himal (Khumbu) recorded by the American Alpine Journal at 6,470 m; the mountain’s commonly cited main summit elevation is also reported as 6,476 m in established mountaineering references . The peak is associated with a standard or “Normal Route” and with approaches through the Hinku/Sanu valley area, east of the more frequented Everest trekking corridor .

It contains three main summits: Mera North, 6,476 metres (21,247 ft); Mera Central, 6,461 metres (21,198 ft); and Mera South, 6,065 metres (19,898 ft), as well as a smaller "trekking summit", visible as a distinct summit from the south but not marked on most maps of the region.

Documented mountaineering milestones

  • 1953 — First ascent of Mera Peak, by the route that became the standard route: J.O.M. (Jimmy) Roberts and Sen Tenzing
  • 1986 — First recorded ascent of the Southwest Pillar on Mera Peak: Mal Duff, Ian “Tat” Tattersall, with Ray Delaney identified as part of the expedition
  • 2010 — Solo ascent of the new 1,200 m “In Memoriam” route on the right side of the southwest face: Joe Simpson

Routes and approaches

A recognised approach reaches the Mera area via Lukla and the Hinku Valley, then follows the upper valley toward Khare before joining the mountain’s standard route; the American Alpine Journal also records descent by the Normal Route and a base camp in the Sanu Valley .
