- AD 125 — Recorded ascent of Mount Etna: Roman emperor Hadrian is described in historical accounts as having climbed Etna during a visit to Sicily.

The UNESCO World Heritage property is largely road-free but includes forest and mountain tracks, while tourism facilities in the surrounding buffer zone include a cableway and organized access routes toward the upper mountain .
