Move your mountain library
Bring your CalTopo objects into a richer alpine planning workflow.
CalTopo lets you choose which map objects to export and supports GPX, KML and GeoJSON. Choose GPX for the cleanest handoff into Traverse.
The short answer
Open a CalTopo map, choose Export at the top of the map object column, select the objects and choose GPX. Then share the file to Import to Traverse on iPhone or upload it to Atlas on the web.
Export selected CalTopo objects
- Open the CalTopo map containing the route, markers or lines.
- Choose Export at the top of the map object column.
- Select the objects you want and choose GPX as the export format.
- Open the downloaded file with Import to Traverse, then review the imported routes and waypoints.
Move a map collection
- Use CalTopo's export dialog to include the objects you want from a map.
- If your collection is split across maps, export each map or object set as a GPX file.
- Open Traverse web → Atlas → Import GPX and select the files together.
- Organise the imported material into a folder and add only the useful lines to a trip plan.
What moves across
- Lines and tracks — Yes: GPX carries the selected geographic objects.
- Waypoints — Yes: Markers can be imported as Traverse waypoints when represented in the GPX.
- CalTopo map layers — No: A GPX is not a copy of the CalTopo map or its layers.
- Elevation data — Depends: CalTopo documents elevation in GPX exports for Pro users.
- Photos and styling — Limited: Recreate presentation and attachments in Traverse plans.
Keep the objects, change the planning surface
CalTopo is a powerful map-construction tool. Traverse is designed for the next decision: understand the 3D mountain, compare terrain and conditions, attach a route to a day, and carry the plan offline.
Use GPX when the destination is a route
KML and GeoJSON can be useful in GIS workflows, but GPX is the clearest route handoff into Traverse's Atlas importer.
